The tactic of Budokai-do consists of avoiding the attacks of the opponent, bring him out of balance and eliminate him as fast as possible, thus giving him no chance. In Budokai-do you learn to avoid and hit in one motion by moving around your opponent in half circles and full circles, using his dead spot to counterattack. The fighting symbolism is also expressed in the Kandu with the moon standing for fighting in half circles, the sun for fighting in full circles, the four directions for fighting in four angles: countering (Kandu Hanne) in full and half circles you are able to hit in four directions. The fighting is done in circles and the centre point is immobilizing on the ground.
Teachings are based on the five elements, earth (darti, or prithiwi),wind (bayo), water (jal), fire (agni) and heaven (akash).

These five elements are really the basic of the whole teaching of Budokai-do. You learn to block kicks or strikes with low blocks, middle blocks and higher blocks but very important is that you are avoiding and blocking same time. You don’t stay in front of your opponent while you are blocking but you move around him in half or full circles. Once you move around the opponent he will be confused and loose his balance which will give you the great advantage to hit him, pull him, push him, grab him (fire) to bring him on the ground and immobilize him on the earth. When you block his punch or kick you always try to parry his attack downwards (earth), to the inside (water) or to the outside (wind) as illustrated. Heaven (Akash) stands for high blocks to immediately grab him by the neck, head, hair etc..
The training focuses on teaching self defence techniques as fast as possible so as to enable people to feel safe in a very short time. It includes partner training, training with kick bags, locks, strangleholds etc. It is not about repeating the same old techniques endlessly in classical low karate stands, but about teaching efficient methods in fighting stance, learning to move swiftly and adequately, which encourages the student and leads him to calm confidence and an eagerness to participate in competitions to test his skills.
In many partner trainings combinations of defence and counterattacks are taught, in order to develop the suppleness and speed of the movements.
In free fights kicking and punching on the body is practiced in all kinds of techniques as low kicks, elbow- and knee techniques so as to simulate, as completely as possible, the situation of a real fight. But mainly also defence techniques are taught, so that the attack of the opponent hurts him more than it does harm to you.
The teachings also include ground fighting "bhumi donda" with throwing techniques, clinching, locks, strangleholds, ground techniques in which locks are used to immobilize the opponent on the ground.
