Dai ek meaning one brother in Nepalese language are the 11 basic patterns you learn until Kalo peti pahilo taha. (black belt 1st degree) Dai dui meaning two brothers are the 11 patterns for Kalo peti dosro taha (black belt 2nd degree) Natural walking stances (ladako asana) are used which allow easier movements in all direction. In Dai ek all blocking, striking and punching are done with open hands. In Dai Dui yantra (patterns) You will use one open hand to confuse your opponent while other hand is used same time to punch with the fist. Kicks are executed at low or middle level as stopping kicks and as for sweeping and leg hooks.
All Yantra (patterns) in Budokai-do are based on the five elements, earth (darti, or prithiwi),wind (bayo), water (jal), fire (agni) and heaven (akash).
These five elements are really the basic of the whole teaching of Budokai-do. You learn to block kicks or strikes with low blocks, middle blocks and higher blocks but very important is that you are avoiding and blocking same time. You don't stay in front of your opponent while you are blocking but you move around him in half or full circles. Once you move around the opponent he will be confused and loose his balance which will give you the great advantage to hit him, pull him, push him, grab him (fire) to bring him on the ground and immobilize him on the earth. When you block his punch or kick you always try to parry his attack downwards (earth), to the inside (water) or to the outside (wind) as illustrated. Heaven (Akash) stands for high blocks to immediately grab him by the neck, head, hair etc..
These patterns will help you to focus on the five elements and when you practise with partner you can freely add kicks and punches, sweeping, throwing as you imagine the situation of attack. This will always be your personal choice because for executing with partner you have lots of possibilities. Main thing is that you follow the direction of the pattern and that the five elements are recognizable, that all techniques of the original pattern are there. And finish your opponent always on the ground to immobilize him or with a kick or stranglehold.
Always keep in mind these five elements when practising and you will soon understand that the basic of all attack and defence lay in these elements.
By exercising these patterns, you will develop accuracy in blocking, punching and kicking at a short distance.
While practising focus on movement of the upper body, hip rotation, speed, power and powerful breathing out from the abdomen.
You have to be able to execute these patterns very speedily and powerfully in a big and small area and perform against one or more opponents as to simulate a realistic situation of attack.
Before and after finishing the yantra you greet with "Namaste" by joining the palm of the hands, finger tops upwards in front of the face.
A video from the all yantra (patterns) performed by Maha Guru is available and must be used together with this book for perfect comprehension.
